Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary

The common saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” holds a negative connotation. Perhaps like society’s degrading attitudes toward aging humans, there is a common dismissiveness toward senior dogs. What we at Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary believe is that maybe the “old dog” doesn’t need new tricks. Just maybe the “old dog” needs someone to love him or her just the way they are.
With that sentiment in mind, we are excited to announce our 2nd Annual “Dog Art For Old Friends” fundraiser. The event will take place on October 16, 2015 at Omni Nashville. Artists have volunteered to design one-of-a-kind dog statues that will be auctioned off at the end of the evening; all proceeds will benefit Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary. The giving spirits and inspired talents of each artist will surely illuminate the beauty and worth of the senior dogs that we serve.
If you are interested in sponsoring the event , click here for more details. Email Karen at [email protected] if you have questions. Check us out on page 56 in the Oct 2015 issue of Nashville Arts Magazine!
For those of you who want to contribute but cannot attend the October 16 benefit, online bidding for most of the dog statues and silent auction items has begun at http://www.32auctions.com/dogartforoldfriends2015.

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary is a Forever Foster Home based Sanctuary in beautiful Mount Juliet TN, generally housing approximately 30-35 senior dogs at the Sanctuary and many more in temporary and Forever Foster Homes. While providing lifetime homes for senior dogs, OFSDS strives to raise awareness of the joys and challenges of living with older dogs. We are an all volunteer run, 501(c)(3), non-profit organization. Learn more about us at ofsds.org and like us on Facebook!
Senior dogs, especially those with medical problems or disabilities, face a much greater chance of euthanasia at shelters than younger dogs because it is difficult to find adopters for them due to their shorter additional life expectancy and unknown veterinary costs. Most of these wonderful senior dogs will be able to live happily with a good quality of life if given a chance. They make wonderful companions because they are mature, calm and loving. It is more difficult for them to settle in, and once they do, it is difficult for them to move again. For this reason we strive to find them forever foster or adoptive homes where they can live out their retirement years as a loved family member.
Our mission is to (1) provide a loving home, good food, high quality vet care, compassion and comfort to senior dogs for the remainder of their lives,
(2) build a Forever Foster Home network to enable us to place more senior dogs in loving, home settings for the duration of their lives, (3) provide education on the joys and challenges of caring for aging dogs, and (4) work with other dog rescue groups to promote the adoption of senior dogs.
"We do not concern ourselves with the quantity of time that they have left, rather the quality of the life that we can provide them for that time."
